About this series

The Foundation | The Leadership | The Work

We are pleased to present an 8-course series on the fundamentals of running a nonprofit organization that will be successful and sustainable over time for a long term impact.

Our region has watched multiple organizations grow in “The Work:” the outward facing programs, funding, and marketing over the last five years. Most if not all, were ill-equipped for such rapid growth at the level of “The Foundations”. There is no other time but now, to take the time out (4 hours a month) to focus on the Foundations, the Human element, and then the work.

  • Before you move forward you need to focus on where you are going. Master strategic planning essentials with a focus on mission, vision, and values. Learn to shape organizational direction, articulate purpose, and drive success in a nonprofit context.

  • Often an organization grows outward but neglects the basics at the foundation of all corporate entities. Identify best practices for running a business, what to focus on, and the most effective way of ensuring you are legally and ethically sound.

  • The three courses focusing on leadership build a leadership philosophy that starts with the executive leadership team (top 2-3 people), and spills into effective team work. This course will utilize Working Genius to understand self and team.

  • Critical to every nonprofit’s long-term success and sustainability is the Board. The number one struggle for organizations—second only to fundraising— is board leadership. This course will guide you to build a successful board—the right individuals, with clear roles, working as a team.

  • Most nonprofit executives in our region come up through the ranks, with passion and grit. Most do not have a clear sense of what the job entails, how to be successful, or how to resource this complex role. We will start with knowing what to pay attention to and how to build strength (and a successor) over time.

  • As we turn to looking outward, we will focus on effective planning, choosing and discerning the right yeses in a sea of opportunities, and the critical process and benefits of cross-organizational and cross-sector collaboration.

  • Every organization thinks everyone should know about them and most admit to being “the best kept secret.” Build clarity about how to do marketing on a lean budget, focused on the right audiences, through the right channels. This course is a great pre-requisite to the last course on fundraising.

  • Typically, organizations start with the question, “where is the money?” This series is built to prepare your organization to be successful overtime in fundraising. Knowing who you are and where you are going directly affects how you build your case, identify your prospects and leadership, and the strategies you choose to support your cause.
